13 Decor Ideas to Make The Most of A Small Living Room Space

When your living room is on the smaller side, it takes a little more planning to find the most efficient furniture layout to make sure the space doesn’t feel cluttered!

You might have less room to work with here, but once you decide how you want to use the room – is it only a relaxing space or are you also adding an office corner? – it’s a good starting place to begin your decorating journey. No matter how small your living room is, you can still turn it into an inviting, functional and stylish space. Here are a couple of ideas to help you just do that:

1. Pick a neutral or white color scheme

If painting is permitted, paint your walls beige or white. Lighter colors create the impression of airiness and help make your living room look roomier than it really is. Moreover, go for white or pale-colored furnishings to match this color tone for the same reason.

2. Use vertical space to your advantage

While space is not on your side, you can make good use of the vertical space of the living room. Turn to floating shelves and open concept shelving solutions to create more room for your things and to guide the eye upward. It’s a much better furniture choice than closed-off or boxy shelving if you’re looking to invite more light in your living room. Moreover, you can maximize your wall space by hanging baskets to store things.

3. Go for slim furniture

There’s not enough room for the large, bulky furniture you sometimes see in living rooms. In smaller quarters, slim furniture is the way to go. It still provides the functionality you need without crowding your space. A tall and slender shelving unit can work wonders in a living room where space is scarce.

4. Turn to a two-seater sofa

The sofa is typically the focal point of a living room. Therefore, you need to make sure you go for a style that matches the space. A two-seat sofa is more than perfect! Two-seaters are usually lower than a typically-sized one, which will add depth to your room. You could do away with the armchairs altogether and have either just one accent chair or a seat with storage.

5. Style the room with a ladder

Amp up the cozy with a storage ladder. Use it to store blankets and throws close to the couch. It’s a much prettier and more practical way than folding them, especially when you’re short on space. This way, you can just lean back and easily reach for a blanket when you’re sitting on the couch and watching TV or reading.

6. Go for furniture that pulls double duty

Multi-functionality is truly a virtue when decorating a small living room space. Think a coffee table that doubles as a dining room table. You could also skip on the coffee table and replace it with an ottoman or a pouf that can still offer you the same functionality a table does if you want to have a coffee, but you can also move it easily if you need to.

7. Use rugs to define space

Rugs can be an effective way to help separate different areas of your living room. Use one rug for the couch and coffee table zone and maybe another one if you’ve created a home office space in the same room. Play with color as well to create the same separation effect: Pick a rug that matches the color of the furnishings placed in the area that you wish to create.

8. Create extra storage with a window bench

Why not create a reading nook by the window? A bench with storage is perfect in this spot, especially if it’s by a bay window. You can use the bench to put away other items you want to keep out of sight. If your home still can’t fit everything without creating clutter, you can turn to self storage. This can be especially useful if you live in a small city apartment, which is generally less spacious. Costs for self storage generally low. Storage unit in Columbus, OH, average around $92/month. Renting a self storage unit in Houston ($94/month) and Charlotte, NC ($97/month) entails similar costs.

9. Choose sheer drapes to invite more light in

Opt for sheer drapes from floor to ceiling to add instant height to your living room. Make sure you hang them very close to the ceiling and allow them to slightly touch the floor for an effortless look. Moreover, choose drapes that match the color scheme of your walls, as color coordination in this spot is likely to create the illusion of a larger space.

10. Have fun with an accent wall

While the color scheme of room is predominantly neutral or white, creating an accent wall in a warm color is sure to make an impression. Think of it as a visual hug that’s meant to relax you. Be daring in your choice of color – paint it mint or choose a mixed patterned wallpaper. You could go for a subdued floral wallpaper for this space that you wish to draw the eyes to.

11. Make the room more spacious with a mirror

Adding a mirror to your living room is one of the simplest ways to create the illusion of space. Go for a larger one or add several of them. You could even hang your mirror(s) on the accent wall. This is an excellent choice, especially if this wall faces the window. This way, the mirrors can reflect the natural light coming from the window.

12. Wall-mount your media

Your TV and other media shouldn’t take up more floor space in your living room. The space beneath your TV can see much more practice usage. Use the walls to mount the TV, but make sure that it’s fixed at eye level, so watching TV can be comfortable. Moreover, you can look for ways to conceal your TV – a patterned cover can easily be installed.

13. Take the wow factor higher

Besides the accent wall, choose at least one piece of décor that stands out from the rest of the room. It’s a trick used to create a focal point that distracts from the actual size of the room. Choose a patterned throw pillow to go on the couch or a lively colored small painting.

You did it. You took the plunge and finally went ahead: you have decided to remodel your basement. If your basement was something of an unused space for the last few years that you only utilized for storage, it can really twist things up to have to think of a way to design your remodeled basement.

Consider what the usage of the space is, how long you plan to live in your home, and what features may need to be installed. Once you have determined that, it’s time to consider what ideas you’re going to go with the fully finish your space.

A thing to note – some designs and themes may be more expensive than others, so budget is always good to keep in mind. Cost may be impacted by your geographical location and hourly rates of your local contractors. Calgary basement development, as an example, can cost anywhere between $28,000 to $60,000 and upwards on average. If budget is a concern of yours, keep in mind what features you can fit within your budget and don’t be afraid to mix-and-match to your liking.

Here are 10 stylish decoration ideas and themes for your newly remodelled basement.

1. A home theatre

If you have kids or often welcome over company, there’s nothing that screams “entertainment!” more than having a home theatre. Consider installing a pull-down screen and a projector for the ultimate “big screen” touch and incorporate a sound system to bring the ambience to the whole place. You can set up sofas or recliner-chairs for your audiences (or just your family.) The hardest part may be choosing a movie that everyone can agree on.

2. Try out some eclectic patterns

If your basement was feeling a touch boring, considering sprucing up the place with some eclectic patterning for the wallpaper and flooring as well as the décor. Not only does this bring some liveliness to your lowest floor, but it can make the space seem even larger than it is with bright colours that pop.

3. Make a home gym

Not a fan of your typical gym membership, or maybe your local gym is a little far for your tastes? Not to worry. A home gym can really save you some time in your day-to-day and encourage healthier habits. Turn your previously unused space into an area where you can install treadmills, put some free weights, or maybe even mount a pull-up bar.

4. Incorporate a guest room

Do you have an elderly parents living at home, or maybe adult children? Try a guest room. This can make your house seem more like a home to potential live-ins. It can also serve as a means of supplemental income for you if you decide to accept tenants.

5. Add shelving or closets for storage

You may continue to use your basement as a storage-space – and that’s okay too. Make it look a bit more appealing by using shelves, closets, and bins under the stairs.

6. Add a wet bar

If you like to have your neighbours over late in the evening, consider adding a wet bar to boost the fun. There are a lot of ways you can do this and many creative design options which will transform your basement from place of boxes to place of memories and fun times.

7. Try a barn door

It sounds a little rustic and far-out there – but a barn door that divides a playroom from the rest of your basement can be a great design choice, depending on what you are looking for. These sliding doors are easy to manage and easy to transport furniture in and out of.

8. Try some a billiard room

Fan of pool? If so, consider turning your basement space into a fun entertainment room by adding in a pool table, hockey table, dart board, or any other game which you fancy. You can go wild – so long as it doesn’t involve possibly throwing a horseshoe through a wall.

9. Convert it into an office

Converting your entire basement into a workspace or simply just a single room can be a good way to hone in on your “focus.” An office space may serve as a dedicated location for you to work so that you aren’t distracted by the other activities in your home.

10. Go for strategic lighting

Is your basement space a little small for your liking? If you are cramped for space and don’t like the look of it, try incorporating lighting in strategic niches to give the appearance of a larger space. This can make the ceiling look much higher than it is and give far more room to the area.

3 Basic Components of Vintage Style

Buying second-hand treasures is the hottest trend in fashion, as well as interior design!

However, you can create vintage arrangements even if you lack time to visit antique markets and charity shops. There are two fundamentally different groups of vintage fans. The members of the first are thrilled mostly with the hunt itself – they love to wade through often cluttered shops to find real pearls on some piles or in the corner. The second group consists of people who genuinely love the vintage style – and they do not necessarily put importance to the story of the item or hunting for astonishing bargains. What matters for them is the effect.

However, how to define the vintage style itself? Technically, it consists of second-hand items. Nevertheless, in recent years the term “vintage” has slightly detached from its initial meaning. Nowadays, it is often used to describe an eclectic style composed of furniture and accessories “with history” or ones that…. pretend to have it. No holds barred! Only your imagination – and the assortment of a local shop – limits you.

Below you will find some elements that will help you in creating a vintage look of the interiors without higher expenses.

Ceramic and Porcelain Handles

Do you love to give the furniture a second life? Adopting abandoned cupboards and chairs is something you cannot resist doing? Well, zero-waste lifestyle is in fashion – however, it’s good to renovate the furniture before putting it your interiors. Treat them with chalk paint – that doesn’t require taking off the old layers of the paint. Moreover,  change the handles. You can find a big choice of this kind of element on the market. Ceramic handles look spectacular and give the interior design a vintage vibe. Especially the porcelain ones will look stunning, especially with bright furniture.

Posters

Obviously, not blockbuster posters received for free from the local cinema. We mean rather old-style ones that will give your arrangement a nice touch. Don’t be afraid to mix! Putting together Toulouse-Lautrec’s iconic works, 90s rave announcements, modernist designs, and art house cinema posters can give stunning results. The same goes for mixing sizes!

Handmade Accessories

It is hard to imagine a valid vintage style without some handmade products. Buying second-hand allows you to avoid mass-produced items for the chain stores. Because you are not buying something new, the quality doesn’t have to be compromised. That’s why fans of vintage often have handmade, high-quality accessories at their disposal. Macramé wall hangings and flower hangers, crochet accessories, embroidered pillow covers, and so on – this will give your interior design a nice touch.

Enjoy your vintage hunt, and remember – minimalism is already passé!
